If you’re planning a trip to Scheveningen and wondering what activities and attractions are worth your time, this ultimate guide has got you covered.
Let’s dive in!
Take a romantic sunset walk along the beach
Scheveningen is a lovely coastal town located in the Netherlands, about an hour away from Amsterdam. With its stunning beaches, fun beach culture, and cool nightlife, it’s no wonder that it’s a popular destination for couples and honeymooners.
If you are staying at least three days in Amsterdam, Scheveningen Beach is a perfect spot to take a romantic sunset walk with someone special. The beach offers stunning panoramic views and a lovely atmosphere.
I love the fresh breeze of the ocean air – it has such a relaxing and romantic vibe to it. Especially during sunset time, the sky lights up in all the colors.
The beach stretches out endlessly, so you can walk quite a bit to reach the end. Make sure to walk over to the beautiful Ferris Wheel and watch the sunset from there.
This was one of my favorite things to do in Scheveningen with my husband on our romantic weekend getaway.
Enjoy a couples’ massage at one of the area’s many spas
Massage therapy is known to help reduce stress and promote relaxation. Getting a massage with your partner can help you both unwind and relax together – and what better place to take a relaxing couples massage than by the beautiful beach of Scheveningen?
Couples’ massages are super romantic, and we try to do one every time we go away together. This is a great tip for any romantic weekend getaway that we swear by.
Here are the best places that offer couples’ massages in Scheveningen Beach
If you would rather do a full-on spa day with your partner, check out the Grand Hotel Amrath Kurhaus Scheveningen, The Hague.
The hotel’s spa is called Senses Beauty & Wellness and offers a range of treatments. They are designed to promote relaxation and rejuvenation. The spa has a cool sauna, steam bath, and a range of massage treatments. They even offer hot stone massages, which I love.
Have a cozy picnic on the beach
A romantic picnic on the beach is one of my favorite things to do in Scheveningen. It allows you to enjoy the beauty of the ocean and the sand while sharing a delicious meal with your partner.
Whether you bring some yummy breakfast treats or some champagne and strawberries for the sunset – it will always be super special.
When packing for a beach picnic, you could also consider bringing local Dutch treats like stroopwafels, Gouda cheese, and fresh bread. You could also include some fruits like strawberries or apples, as well as a bottle of wine or some refreshing drinks.
Finally, don’t forget some beach blankets, pillows, and an umbrella for shade to make your picnic as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
Rent bikes and explore the town and coastline together
Renting bikes in Scheveningen is a great way to explore the area and take in the beautiful scenery. As opposed to my home country Austria, biking in the Netherlands is a lot easier because there are barely any hills.
There are several bike rental shops located throughout Scheveningen. They offer a range of bikes, including traditional bicycles, e-bikes, and tandem bikes. Once you have your bike, there are plenty of great places to explore in Scheveningen.
One popular route is the “Duindorp and Scheveningen Dunes” route. It takes you through the beautiful dunes and along the beach. I love the dunes and I think they are a great place to explore. Another popular route is the “Haagse Bos and Scheveningen Beach” route. It takes you through the pretty forest and along the coastline. I would rate this route with medium difficulty.
If you’re looking for a longer and more challenging ride, you could consider taking the “Scheveningen to Kijkduin” route. It takes you from Scheveningen to the neighboring town of Kijkduin along a beautiful coastal bike path. You will pass by some amazing viewpoints on this route, so it is worth exploring.
One thing to keep in mind when going cycling in the Netherlands: scooters are also allowed on bike paths. Don’t be surprised if they sneak up on you.
Take a hike through the dunes
If you don’t like cycling then this is a great alternative for your visit to Scheveningen.
I love taking long hikes through the dunes with my husband for several reasons. It is usually a lot more quiet than on the streets and the dunes are super picturesque.
Here are some popular walking routes in Scheveningen:
- “Scheveningen-Dunes”: this route takes you through the Meijendel dunes, one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands. This route starts at the visitor center near the entrance of the park. You’ll pass by some dunes, lakes and the forest.
- “Panorama Mesdag and Scheveningen Dunes”: starts at the Panorama Mesdag museum in The Hague and takes you through the dunes to the beach at Scheveningen
- “Scheveningen to Wassenaar”. This route takes you from Scheveningen to the neighboring town of Wassenaar. This route is a little more intense, but very beautiful nonetheless
Enjoy a sunset cruise on a boat
Sunset cruises are not only in Scheveningen one of my favorite things to do. We try to do one at every destination that we travel to.
Sunset cruises in Scheveningen are special because they offer a unique and romantic way to experience the beauty of the coastline. You can see the Pier and the Ferris Wheel from a different point of view.
As the sun begins to set, the sky is painted with stunning hues. You can feel a warm and romantic glow over the water. From the deck of a sunset cruise boat, you can take in the breathtaking scenery. I love relaxing while the boat glides along the water.
Some of the cruise providers even offer a bottle of wine and some Dutch snacks with the cruise. What better way to spend an evening in Scheveningen?
Dine at one of the town’s many seafood restaurants
Scheveningen is known for its excellent seafood restaurants, many of which offer fresh and locally caught fish and shellfish. Most restaurants are located on the beach or at the promenade and offer stunning views. You can see the sunset and the ocean from there. Romantic sunset dinners are one of my favorite things to do in Scheveningen.
Our favorite beach restaurant in Scheveningen is the Waterreus. We had a lovely dinner at this restaurant and enjoyed the fresh fish of the day. The cocktails are great and the staff was super friendly.
Other great fish restaurants in Scheveningen are:
- Catch by Simonis
- The Harbour Club

Take a day trip to nearby The Hague and explore the historic city together
Justin and I enjoyed a super long walk all the way to The Hague on our lovely romantic weekend. It is something I recommend doing if you want to see more of the city.
It takes about an hour of walking (you can also take the metro) to reach The Hague. In the city, you can see many historical buildings, museums, and government houses. My favorite place was the part of the city with all the embassies of many countries.
Make sure to walk by the Mauritshuis Museum, the Binnenhof, and the International Criminal Court. Escher in Het Palais and the Peace Palace are also some great stops you can make on the way.
If you love cultural info, you can book a local guide to accompany you on your walk. Luckily my husband is Dutch so I usually don’t need a guide. Abroad we love booking a walking tour with a local guide to ask questions and get some insider tips.
Have a High Wine Arrangement
A High Wine Arrangement is a fun and sophisticated alternative to traditional High Tea. You can enjoy several glasses of wine paired with delicious small bites and snacks.
It’s a great way to relax and unwind with your partner. It is also one of my favorite things to do in Scheveningen.
In Scheveningen, there are several restaurants and bars that offer High Wine Arrangements:
- Encore by Simonis: This restaurant offers a High Wine Arrangement featuring a selection of premium wines paired with a variety of delicious bites, including oysters, charcuterie, and cheese.
- Catch by Simonis: This popular seafood restaurant also offers a High Wine Arrangement with a selection of wines and tasty bites, including smoked salmon, croquettes, and mini-burgers.

Our room also offered an amazing view over the harbor as well as the entire beach. There is no place more romantic than this for sure. Honestly, the room was so great we had trouble leaving for all of these fun activities in Scheveningen. This is a great tip for a weekend trip from Amsterdam.
